Getting your car home from Turkey
Many people from the Netherlands drive to family in Turkey every summer, through Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria. The Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule border crossing leads to Edirne and on by motorway to Istanbul. Turkish motorways and the Bosphorus bridges charge tolls through the electronic HGS system. Stopped at the roadside? Switch on the hazard lights, put on a vest, set out the warning triangle and wait behind the crash barrier. Call 112 if you are in danger. Note that a foreign-registered car is recorded in the driver's name when it enters Turkey. If you have to leave without the car, contact Turkish customs first. For immediate help on the spot, call a local çekici (tow truck) first; we then collect the car from the garage or address where it stands.
